If you’re like most people, you want to live the healthiest life possible: free from illness, disease, and infection. And who would blame you these days?  One way to do this is to consider the anti-inflammatory benefits of polyphenol-rich olive oil to improve your health.

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is one of our bodies’ critical natural healing mechanisms. It is a vital process in which any tissues injured by bacteria, trauma, heat, toxins, or viruses, send chemical signals that cause the nearby blood vessels to “leak” fluid into the injured area.  The leaking serves two purposes: to isolate any foreign substance and to call for white blood cells (phagocytes) to accumulate and “eat” the germs, dead tissue, bacteria, etc.  This is all good for us. Think of inflammation as part of our bodies’ emergency response for healing itself and making itself healthy and whole again.

Unfortunately, when the body becomes overwhelmed by inflammation from inflammatory foods or certain serious medical conditions, such as cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and neurodegenerative diseases, it can result in chronic inflammation. This is not good.  It may even cause your disease or illness to worsen. Chronic inflammation can also put you at risk for developing additional, more severe medical conditions.

So How do Polyphenol-Rich Olive Oils Help Inflammation?

Consuming extra virgin olive oil, daily, is a natural way to fight off chronic inflammation in your body. Olive oils, especially extra virgin olive oils that are enriched with olive polyphenols have anti-inflammatory ingredients, antioxidants and heart-healthy, monounsaturated fats. Those EVOO that are further enriched with additional olive polyphenols can provide several times more benefits than standard olive oil.

Scientists refer to polyphenols as “reducing agents”.  Olive polyphenols can “scavenge” for the reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can cause free radicals and cell damage. These polyphenols may also reduce the catalytic activity of enzymes that help create ROS in the body.  Some polyphenols, like those in olives might also be important to protecting the inner plasma membranes within the cells that further protect the cells from oxidation.*
