You have probably heard of the common ways to boost your immune system like increasing your vitamin C intake, getting plenty of sleep, and overall taking care of yourself. Howeverr, you may not know that you can support your immune system with extra virgin olive oil!

What Impact Can Extra Virgin Olive Oil Bring Me?

You may think oils like olive oil are not good for you.  But so much research has been performed on the Mediterranean Diet and its health benefits – that researchers have actually drilled down specifically on the active ingredients in olive oil – the high polyphenol levels in extra virgin olive oil.

What they found. is that in addition to the obvious cardiovascular benefits of EVOO, the polyphenols, anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients of olives have tremendous and exciting benefits for your immune system.

Specifically, research indicates that extra virgin olive oil, and the natural polyphenol ingredients of hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol and oleocanthal are very beneficial in the following immune response diseases:*

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Lupus
  • Psoriasis
  • And even cancer

How Does Extra Virgin Olive Oil Help the Immune System?

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to “danger” or damage to the body.  The problem comes when the body does this in an auto-immune manner and runs out of control.  Extra virgin olive oil has specialized polyphenols that help various mechanisms in the body promote the immune system and inflammation-reduction support.  Here is a quick summary of these mechanisms that have been reported:

Olives, Olive Oil and Bread on the Table

  1. Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a multistep and complex breakdown in the body that leads to immune-inflammation in the joints by means of activating immune cells and the resident cells (osteoclasts and the chondrocytes for example) into producing too much unnecessary inflammation.  This can cause oxidative stress and begins to destroy the joint.  Extra virgin olive oil polyphenols counter-acts that inflammation and oxidation in the joints.  And specifically, the hydroxytyrosol in olives, has been shown to promote healing in the chondrocytes in cartilage.*

       2. Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, which are  chronic disorders that affect the intestinal tract, resulting in the dysfunctional interaction between the body’s genetics, immune system and gut microbiota.  It has been observed that just a few tablespoons a day of polyphenol-rich olive oil (250mg/Kg – such as in CardiOlive® 25x) for three weeks can increase the proportion of intestinal bacteria and increase anti-oxidant benefits to these patients.

      3. Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

MS is a chronic T-cell (part of the immune system that focus on certain foreign particles in the body) autoimmune disease of the central nervous system that eventually destroys the myelin and neurons in the body.  And polyphenols from olives can exert neuroprotective functions by modulating the body’s immune response.*

      4. Lupus

Lupus is a very complex auto-immune disease that primarily affects women.  The anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of the polyphenols in extra virgin olive oil could help to alleviate some of the symptoms of lupus.*

      5. Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease.  Studies that focused on the benefits of olive oil in the Mediterranean Diet found that the patients with higher olive oil intake had lower c-reactive Protein levels and less inflammation than the non-Mediterranean Diet patients.*

      6. Cancer

And even cancer can be slowed down or reduced by the power of olive polyphenols.  A recent article published indicated that – although not for all cancers – but powerful olive polyphenols (specifically the hydroxytyrosol in olives) could remove cancer agents, modulate cancer cell signaling (certain cancers send signals to spread), and promotes apoptosis (cancer cell death).   The cancers that seemed to be most impacted by olive polyphenols are breast, pancreas, esophagus, colon, prostate, and lung.  Our OliPura® Advanced supplement have clinical testing for reduced c-Reactive Proteins and less pain for breast cancer patients.*

So now that you’ve learned more about how you might support your immune system, it’s time to get some olive polyphenols.  At Oliventures, we offer a wide range of olive polyphenol products from hydroxytyrosol-rich supplements, to enriched extra virgin olive oil.  Be sure to share this article with friends and family to help them reap these benefits as well.
